Opened in 1936, the Hoover Dam was constructed to tame the Colorado River, and supply water to the South Western states, or more specifically Los Angeles.


Technically it is a concrete arch-gravity dam across the Black Canyon of the Colorado River.

Damming the Colorado has resulted in the creation of Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.
